On Friday 16th March, Room 19 went to The Groynes to learn about creatures in our waterways. Our instructors Ben and Bill were fantastic and made our day heaps of fun. Our first activity was trying to scoop up bugs out of the river and find out what bugs they were. We used a sieve taped onto a long pole. We found out that the most popular water creatures we found were 'Water Boatmen'. The second most popular water creatures we found were 'Back Swimmers'. Once we found them, we carried them in the sieve back to our tray. The people waiting at the trays, picked them up one by one with a spoon and studied them. When they were sure they knew what they were from looking at the sheet, they put them into compartments of the trays. there was 6 compartments in each tray. Different kinds of water creatures went in different compartments because some water creatures might eat other species of water creatures. Where I found lots of water boatmen was by the plants in the water. You needed to be careful that you didn't splash the water around too much when you put it in or take it out because 1: The water could splash all over you and other people and 2: It could scare the water creatures away that you are trying to catch. That was loads of fun. Then afterwards we played a game.
